People Average Down

One thing I noticed in running an organization is that the primary reason to keep A players around and not tolerate anything less is that people’s natural tendency is to average down.  Meaning, if someone is getting by or even succeeding by doing the bare minimum, then others get the idea that the habit is acceptable or tolerated.

In order to run an effective team, it’s critical that the smartest and hardest of workers get praised and gain new responsibilities and those who average down the organization are weeded out quickly.
